DIRECTIONS:

From I-40: Exit on Exit 195B on to Milton Rd./Hwy 89A, to Exit 341 McConnell Dr. Turn left on McConnell Dr. Turn left on Buelah Dr. Turn right on Woodlands Village Blvd. Ramada Suites is third business on the left.

From I-17: Continue north under I-40 on Milton Rd./Hwy 89A to Exit 341; then the same as above.

Historic Route 66PROCEDURE: In the Lobby look for the Walk Registration box and follow the directions.

START/FINISH TIMES: You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the warmer summer months it is advisable to carry plenty of water and wear sunglasses and a hat.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: This walk is on paved sidwalks and wood-chipped walking paths through the town of Flagstaff. The route starts on the edge of the Northern Arizona University, winds through the historic downtown Flagstaff area, and follows a long stretch of historic Route 66. The walk is rated 3 (1 is easiest and 5 is the most difficult) due to the elevation and some hills; it is suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

AWARD: There is no special award ("A" Award) for this event. An interesting assortment of medals and patches from previous events, "B" awards, depicting desert flora and fauna and historic sites is available.

REGISTRATION FEES:

"B" award and IVV credit is $4.00.

IVV Credit only is $3.00.

You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.

You may do this walk one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

STRUTTIN' DOWN MAINSTREET SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Struttin' Down Main Street Special Award Program. It goes down Flagstaff's historic Main Street.

WALKING AMERICA'S MURALS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking America's Murals Special Award Program. There are several murals along the walk.

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Hooray for Hollywood Special Award Program. The route goes past scenes in the movies "The Bachelorette" (2003), "National Lampoon's Vacation" (1983), and others.

WORLD LIBRARY CHALLENGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the World Library Challenge Special Award Program. It goes by the Coconino County Public Library.

CLASSIC AMERICAN DINERS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Classic American Diners Special Award Program. There is a classic diner on Milton Rd. along the walk.

RAILROAD HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RailRoad Heritage Special Award Program. It goes past the restored Santa Fe RR train station (now serving as the visitors center) and through the old railroad underpass for Historic Route 66.

WALKING COURTHOUSES IN THE USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking Courthouses in th USA Special Award Program. The route of the walk goes by the county courthouse on Birch Ave. & San Francisco St.

SPIRIT OF WALKING CEMETERY STROLL SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Spirit of Walking Cemetery Stroll Special Award Program. The route of the walk goes by the Citizens Cemetery on San Francisco St.

WINERY & BREWERY USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the Winery & Brewery USA Special Award Program. It goes by Flagstaff Brewing Company.

AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes many of the sites mentioned in the book Flagstaff Historic Walk: A Stroll Through Old Downtown, by Richard K. Mangum and Sherry G. Mangum, 1993.

WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "F" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.

ELIGIBILITY: This event is open to everyone. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are allowed but should be on a leash.

LETTERBOXING: For those active in Letterboxing there is a box site near the route of this walk.

SAFETY ALERT: During the winter months the route may be covered with ice and snow. The elevation is 7,000 ft. Plan on additional time to complete the walk.
